My newest book, Forgotten Widow, is now available! I’ll be signing debut copies at the Mid Atlantic Air Museum’s World War II Weekend today through Sunday. The book is the museum’s official companion to its rare P-61 Black Widow night fighter, which is nearing the end of its long restoration process. The aircraft was recovered from Indonesian mountainside in the 1980s in a series of daring expeditions. When complete, it will be the only known flying Black Widow in the world.

From the book:

On January 6, 1945, a P-61 Black Widow night fighter crashed into the slopes of Mount Cyclops on the island of New Guinea. Forty years later, a team from the Mid Atlantic Air Museum set out to recover the wreckage and restore the rare aircraft to its original flying condition. This is their story.

The Mid Atlantic Air Museum was founded in 1980 under the direction of World War II veteran Gene Strine and his son, Russ. As experienced pilots, aircraft mechanics, and businessmen, the Strines were the perfect candidates to recover the Black Widow from Indonesia. Together, they would spend twelve years and thousands of man hours negotiating salvage rights and traveling halfway around the world to the remote jungle mountainside where the Black Widow lay. They risked everything to save this important piece of aviation history, negotiating difficult terrain, dangerous working conditions, and a maze of bureaucracy. But their gamble paid off, and in the end they emerged victorious.

Today, the museum proudly displays its collection of more than eighty aircraft at its facility in Reading, Pennsylvania. With the goal of restoring their planes to award-winning airworthy museum condition, the Strines work tirelessly. The P-61 Black Widow is nearing the end of its long restoration process, and will soon take to the skies once again. When it does, it will be the only known P-61 in the world to fly.

Forgotten Widow is available from the Mid Atlantic Air Museum store, or by contacting the authors. Proceeds go towards the Black Widow’s restoration.

A book that I designed for the Holy Guardian Angels Regional School, entitled Hello Henrietta, should be arriving shortly. The school’s third graders wrote and illustrated the (true) story of a hawk that flew into their gym and lived in the school for several days last year.

From the cover:

Hello Henrietta is the true story of a red-tailed hawk who flew into the gym of the Holy Guardian Angels Regional Elementary School in Berks County, Pennsylvania.

On school picture day, Henrietta arrived unannounced through an open door in the gym. She perched on the rafters, watching the children and faculty with great curiosity. For the next three days she lived in the school and resisted all efforts to free her. The children devised ways to lure the hawk from her new home. They tried baiting her with caged animals, drawing her interest with sponges, and even tempting her with meatballs. Nothing seemed to work.

In the end, the hawk left on her own terms. The children were sad to see her go, but they were glad for her visit. Henrietta still returns to the school from time to time. She sits in a tree or perches atop the church steeple, keeping watch over the children and the school she briefly called home.

Hello Henrietta will be available for sale from the Holy Guardian Angels Regional School as a fundraiser. Congratulations to all the students and faculty who participated in the project!

I’ve just completed design work for a new book called My Hero, My Son by Joseph Baddick. It’s the true story of the author’s son, a young paratrooper who gave his life to save another soldier in Iraq.

From the cover:

My Hero, My Son is a celebration of the life and achievements of Sgt. Andrew J. Baddick, an 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper who sacrificed himself to save a fellow soldier in Iraq. Narrated by his father Joseph, the account begins with A.J.’s birth, recalls his youth in the Pennsylvania coal region, and continues through his life-defining military service. Through anecdotes, personal letters, and interviews, we witness an adventurous teen’s transformation into a soldier and an American hero.

The book debuts this April. Head over to my portfolio to see the cover design. For more information, send Joe a message at josephbaddick@gmail.com.
